Hello from Wimberley, Texas!

Hi R2R members! My hubby and I finally did it. We have started our first reef tank (we did freshwater and African cichlid tanks years ago) . We bought a Biocube 29. We're on week four and already having our ups and downs. We started with two fish after the tank water was deemed ready with our live rock and sand, by our local fish store (that being Austin, our little town doesn't have a fish store!). We got a Coral Beauty Angel (later learned this probably wasn't the best choice for our tank) and a Pajama Cardinal. We lost the Coral Beauty last week. It had a spot that I would have called Ick in a fresh water tank. We did the recommended water change and the fish really did look better, but just never seemed to have a healthy appetite and passed away. Now our PJC has a cloudy eye and has really started not looking so well. I got some Pimafix and Melafix (have some Prazipro on order from Amazon, but decided we couldn't wait to treat until Friday for it to arrive) and are crossing our fingers these others will help it. We have a few corals in the tank- a candy cane, a torch, an acan, a zoanthid and a hammer coral. Anyway, we are happy to be here and sit at the feet of those who have gone before us.

Welcome! This place is great. I am just wondering what your water parameters are since you seem to be having such a rough go, and just based on the picture, your corals do not look so happy. Do you guys test regularly at home?

Thanks. Yes, the lights were off today for a lot of the day- we thought PJC would prefer it, and the corals have not fully opened with the lights on yet. But they may not be happy as they should be either. We are not testing at home. Do you have a kit you recommend for this?

I too have a biocube, it looks like your tank hasn't went through a complete cycle.
I would at this point not add any more fish and give your tank a few more weeks to cycle.
If it was ick that killed your fish then your tank will need to remain fallow for 76 days.

I use the Red Sea kits but I also see a lot of members use Salifert. I would definitely recommend getting your basic test for home. I dont care for the calcium/mg/alk test set from Red Sea but it works. The NO/Phos kit is great, as is the Reef kit. I find them easy enough to use as a fairly new reefer myself ;) oh and lights being off would explain the corals looking wilty, I see my tank in low/moon light all week long and panic that everything is dying! Then the weekend comes and I see it full day and think "wow, I can do this!"

Thanks for all the help and warm welcome everyone. We had our water repeatedly tested and everything was in range. We did our water changes and everything looked good. I'll pick up our own kit so we can test more often than weekly. So unhappy right now.

If they are not already, any time the lfs does a water test asked them to write down the numbers. Also log your own results. It helps to have some history to reference as you go along
