I am about to setup my first salt tank, I live on Humboldt bay & I intend to try to put a tiny piece of the local ocean in my living room. Any advice on using fresh ocean water, invertebrates & live rock from local tide pools would be greatly appreciated.

Live rock is a must. I have read of some using natural seawater as well. Personally I don't have experience with that. Sure someone will be able to help!

I was thinking, you may want to explore some of Paul B’s threads. I know he uses water right from the LI Sound. Not exactly the same as your idea, but there may be something useful:
