Hello everyone! You guys can call me Jay. I made this account weeks ago and never really got into reading threads and entering in contests until recently. Because we are a community, I decided I should introduce myself to you all.
Although I do not own a Reef Tank as of now, I have been doing a lot of research and have found really amazing (and cool!) types of fish, corals, anemones, etc. that, even though they live in saltwater, need special requirements needed to keep them alive and thrive.
In the past I have owned a 1.5 gallon tank, a 10 gallon tank, and now I have a 36 gallon African Cichlid tank. I still have the 1.5 gallon tank but it isn't into use at the moment because my poor fish died. At the time I was not to educated about fish requirements and things of the sort. I got a 10 gallon tank with some neon tetras, sngelfish, and a pleco- an environment potentially dangerous! Despite this, my fish were all okay and lived decent lives.
I got my 36 gallon tank about 2 years ago. I had left the hobby years before because of my previous experiences with fish. Anyway, back to the Cichlids! I have 1 Auratus cichlid, 1 Peacock cichlid, 1 Jewel cichlid, and an African Featherfin Catfish.
Even though I have heard things about cichlids fighting and that it is recommended to overstock the tank, I raised mine together from when they were really young and they have been doing okay.
When i first started the tank, I put an old 40 gallon filter that I had used for that 10 gallon tank to use in the 36. I got fish and I noticed I had to clean it every week. This was primarily because the sand I had gotten was new and kicked up easily- but i was also because of poop and just that the tank had only cycled for a few weeks before. My fish are okay now and I hope they live the long lives i know they could!
This is just my story. Thanks for reading! Be sure to get on Reef2Reef AT LEAST every week or two just so you don't miss out on giveaways, sales, or just very important conversations that might help you or others. Bye for now!
P.S. I will be posting pictures of my tank on this thread fairly soon!

When I get home I'll be sure to take some pictures of my setup. I forgot to mention I have a Fluval 406 set up ;-)
