Help me figure out ammonia spike.

Can someone please message me and help me work through a timeline? Suggest my diagnosis is wrong. Tell me if my hypothesis is crazy.

I’ve been doing this a good while. Never considered myself expert, but I’ve made my rookie mistakes, helped others through theirs. Worked at LFS, etc.

The way my 10g reef spiked ammonia today has me baffled.

If you feel like being Watson to a Sherlock I can give details but i’d rather walk through it one on one and private. Thanks yall

What are you using to test?

What's the timeline of events that would possibly lead to an ammonia spike?

Any recent deaths or changes in your tank?

i have 5 fish happly swimming about eating in 1ppm ammonia according to my hanna ammonia checker (its wrong i don't have 1ppm ammonia)

Consider reading what a pHd chemist and hobbiest of more than 40 years says about ammonia toxicity. Also, consider posting your thread in reef chemistry forum, which may be more appropriate for your scenario.

This was my reply:
I would think if your LFS was selling RODI water with chlorine in it, they'd have a lot of upset customers

Have you actually tested for chlorine to see if it's present? What test kits are you using for ammonia, etc.?

You could use gallons of distilled water than can be purchased at any grocery store or big box store, which should be free of chlorine.
