Want to figure out a wrasse to add to my 40b reef, need one that will not get beat up by my other fish too badly, they are not all that aggressive but I feel like they may bully a smaller wrasse.
Stock list :
Flame Hawkfish (large)
Pair of ocelllaris clownfish
Purple dottyback
Coral beauty angel (large)
Used to have a large Melanurus wrasse but made a mistake by not qt’ing a fish, lost both the wrasse and my old coral beauty. They got along fine but might not want a super large one because of tank size but definitely need a wrasse of decent size to hold its own against my semi-aggressive stock list. I would consider the tank max out on fish. If you really want a wrasse, you can't miss with a Melanurus wrasse for sure.

Yellow wrasse and leopard wrasses are both great choices. Yellow wrasse being the easier to acclimate, bot both are hardy once they’ve settled in properly.

I also suggest de-worming preemptively, leopards are especially known for internal parasites. I use general cure + focus soaked mysis.

I'm afraid that the purple Dotty will cause problems with a new wrasse.

that'd be my concern too. when i added my red line wrasse, my orchid dottyback gave her a rude welcoming for a couple of days. i've never kept a purple, but their reputation looms large..

oddly enough the orchid largely ignored the yellow wrasse when i added it about a week later

Purple dottyback WILL be a problem to new wrasse. So I would definitely stay away from the more delicate leopard wrasse.

A melanurus may hold up, but there is still a risk.

Thanks everyone this helps me out I may wait a little but and end up with a Melanurus possibly
