Dry rock always causes maturity probs imo, so sps will not thrive for well over a year.

With the mature marine blocks I would question the prior tank and I've heard of metal leaching. Maybe a triton test would help. Other thing I would check is your sg. Have you checked your refractometer with a sg solution? This gets overlooked often.
Sg was first thing I checked 1.026.

I have read and followed the long discussion on this forum and although there is some evidence of al leaching there are countless thriving sps tanks with these blocks. And we do not know what form of al is there and if it truly effects corals. Might effect leathers. But yes i have weighed this.

It is just weird that these corals go from encrusting to unexplained melting.

I'm convinced that a tank that is young and still having issues with algae/ diatoms should not have SPS in it. I ran into the same issues you are having. All my parameters were good with no large swings in Alk.

The crazy thing is that besides the algae that is on the sps. I have one small ( about the size of a quarter) of algae on the rock then whatever grows on the glass I have to clean about once a week.

I really don't have an algae issue

not enough food. Imo. well below standard recommends and the verge of ulns. Young tank , yea maybe that too, they are unstable and dry has more probs than cured for obvious reasons.

Do you have any fish in this system? I fragged mine and saved them by upping NO and PO. Al least I think that helped. I still suspect diatoms. I'm not adding anything for a good six months.
