Is this OK? last time I just put it straight in the chamber, but then the algae drifted on and over to the return chamber.

if you don't have a weir or other means of keeping it contained a solution is to build a cage with eggcrate and tie-wraps. it should be enough to keep the chaeto from your pumps and out of your display.

Is that new "growth" white or green? Are the strands of chaeto brittle or strong? Unfortunately, in my refugium, hair and turf algae outcompete chaeto and use it as a growing surface and thereby choke out the chaeto.

I still have tiny strands of chaeto in my system year after removing.

It worked great! In previous systems.

My current system destroyed all but a few filliments.

Can you get some egg crate and make a makeshift weir/ comb?

I think it will do better if allowed to free float.

Also floating is a good sign, sinking is bad.

My sump doesn't have any baffles. I place my Chaeto into a plastic pasta strainer and place it in the sump.

But I also have a sumpless tank where I have some Chaeto inserted into a plastic clip and stuck the suction cup to the return. Works well.

I think your solution is fine.

A comb might work better, I'm still looking for a image of egg crate.

Basically just attach to the top of your sump baffle

The cheato has doubled or tripled in size, don't think I would have needed an egg crate, seems like the current wouldn't pulled it into the return chamber. I now let i free float as you recomanded
