My friend just returned from myrtle beach a found this huge plant washed up on the beach. He said it is a green sponge like plant but its grown over by some type of red algae. Anyone know what type of macro or plant? I found an ID website and thought maybe codium sp but not to sure.

At first I was going to say it looks like Neomeris annulata but it looks like Codium vermilara with some other algae overgrowing it. Where was this found? It may not be a tropical species and in that case I do not know what it is and have to do some reserach.

So codium seems to be the consensus? That was my original thought as well. The red algae is a bit strange though its not coraline. Its actually thick and soft. Its not smooth though its almost like very tine fibers but in some areas its growing out from the branches of the codium in extremely thin leaf like apendages like pencil line thin and they are shaped like the leaves on a fern.
