I would say some live rock and a deep sand bed as they like to burrow, standard saltwater aquarium filtration is fine, I wouldn't get anything fancy for a mantis shrimp, an HOB protein skimmer or even a canister filter is fine, I would not go smaller than 20 gallons, It depends on the species

What variety of mantis are you planning on? I always wanted one of the ones that use the heel for impacting. I studied them a lot in school. But they can break tanks, fingers and anything you stick in the tank.

This is my peacock tank. 90gal lps dominant.
40B is a great size too.

Chiagras are hard hitters for their size. As long as you have it in a decent size tank it should be fine though. (Not a 10 gal tank). 1/4" glass at least.

The whole tank breaker thing comes from people trying to keep them in tiny tanks.

Also. Anything that moves gets written off if it goes into this tank. I've got a few fish, used to have more... I restock hermits and snails every other month.

I would go with something like a 30g Long with 3"+ of course sand/ crushed coral. Lots of LR is reccomended for multiple caves. I have a pair of clowns with my mantis and have had no issues.. just make sure it's well fed if you're planning on keeping fish/ other livestock in the tank with it. I feed mine every other day with mysis, krill, and other meaty foods. I would also keep a few medium/ smaller hermits in the tank for snacks in case the mantis ever gets hungry.

Frozen clams on the half shell are really good as well. My peacock eats a couple every other day.
