Ok I’m planning out my herbie setup, and I’ve found the distance from the bottom of the bulkhead to the inlet of the sump is actually really short… like I might have trouble getting a gate valve in that short of a distance. Will this affect my siphon at all if that distance is really short? I’ve seen posts talking about water flow at a greater distance through a siphon being stronger than flow through a shorter distance siphon. Not sure if you can be too short on that?

boils down to my sump is kinda tall and my stand is kinda short.

Do you have pictures? A slip x slip valve can be put in a pretty tight space. You may want to use some street 90s and eliminate some unions to make it fit.

No pics, sorry. I was just trying to eyeball everything to see roughly where I’d be at and from the bottom of the bulkhead to the top of the sump was only like 6” (at an angle). I’ve decided to go with a smaller sump though on account of I couldn’t even get my other sump in the stand. I’ve got much more room now and I can place the sump to where everything can line up better. My only question now - is it ok to have the drain completely vertical? Will that cause any excess noise by being a straight shot from the tank overflow to the sump? Obviously there’s gonna be a gate valve to slow it down for the siphon.

Nothing wrong with a straight pipe. I would say that it would be optimal for it to be straight. Less flow restriction easy to clean if needed.
