Here it is! Fenbendazole use against hydroids

Any localized treatment? There is a small colony of aiptasia lookalike hydroids growing at the base of my leather and do not want to treat the entire tank. Any thoughts?

I've used it (and posted about it on this forum) for Blue Clove Polyps - had to do it 3x actually as they came back. What is really interesting is that I used it on 1 tank and 3 days later, the a seam on the tank failed (not related, a seam on a Red Sea 750 XXL ) and had to rescue lots of live rock from that tank by moving it to another tank. In the 2nd tank I had lots of Green Star Polyps (GSP) that i wasn't very fond of. About a week later, all GSP was gone, just from the residual Fenbendazole in the live rock. All other softies and inverts were fine. Score 1 for the team in an otherwise difficult time for my tanks.

Hi there. I've been battling BCP for some time and have dosed Fenbendazole 3x to 2 different tanks. From my experience, it's best to hit them a little harder than the recommended dose. The most reliable info on dosage (in my opinion) is from Max Drago in a WP blog post here https://maxdraco.wordpress.com/2013...ue-cloves-polyps-xenia-aiptasia-hydriods-etc/

Summary of his instructions:

– Buy 1 gram packets of Safe-Guard dewormer (22.2% Fenbendazole). Grind it into very fine powder and mix into 1 gallon of water. This will make 222mg/gal of Fenbendazole.

Dosage: Recommend dosage is 2mg per gallon of water to be treated (half dose would be 1mg per gallon). A metric dosage would .5mg per Liter (half dose would be .25mg per Liter).

Examples:
– 1 gallon of water mixed with 1gm 22.2% powder, will treat 111 gallons.

You can purchase the Safe-Guard on Amazon btw. Good luck.

One more thing, if you only have a small patch of BCP, it's probably best to just hit that spot with something like F Aiptasia to avoid any side effects from the Fenbendazole (like algae outbreaks, etc).

Thanks, I’m dealing with hydroids but hopefully the protocol is the same. I’ve done it before but it was years ago and I don’t remember the dose and the product I used is no longer available.

Oh my this is still open! I see people are still using the good ol Fenben. As always hold great caution when deciding to use it as it is potent against many things in your tanks.

I agree with this. While all fish and coral were ok, the tank's equilibrium after Fenben dosing definitly changes. Algae outbreaks are common. For some reason, much of my coralline algae on the tank's back wall died (not on rocks though, strange) and it takes a long time and many, many water changes before you can add some inverts like snails. That being said, having a tank full of Blue Clove Polyps is worse and this is a proven way to get rid of them, but alas, my 3x treatments on 2 different tanks has failed to fully eradicate - now i just spot treat small patches when i see then with F Aiptasia.

Dragging this thread back up, sharing my experience so far. I’ve had blue clove polyps for a few years, and they were becoming a problem. I have a 475 gallon system, including a 300 gallon display. I used four 1 gram packs of safeguard, which would treat 444 gallons at a 2mg/gallon dosage (so I was a little under that). I’d hesitated to treat just out of concerns of unintended consequences, the tank is mostly SPS and a few LPS. So far, 36 hours in, everything seems to be going as I’d hoped. I removed a number of larger trochus snails, but otherwise didn’t try to isolate anything. Here’s a picture of the same spot 36 hours apart, this is one of many rocks throughout the tank that were well covered with the BCP. TBD if that snail in the second pick makes it. I’ll post another update if anything goes awry, but I’m glad to have found this solution and much thanks to those who have shared their experience

I'll let you know how successful i am. I dosed 1.5ml per gallon of the liquid meds as discussed on seahorsesavvy on 7/23 and all my digitate hydroids are seemingly gone. I suspect they are just retracted. I'm debating now what my next step is.

Keep us updated. I 10x dosed by accident fenben and they came back much to my disappointment. I didn’t repeat though.

I was talking to tanknicians and he told me that its usually a likely scenario that you will need your repeat treatment after a few weeks as some inevitably survive. I did a water change yesterday and the tank looks pretty good, but i expect to repeat treatment in a couple weeks. Hermits and stomatella snails that i missed when i pulled my cuc, actually survived the treatment. The toadstool that i could not remove, looks very angry.

I can 100% confirm that it definitely affects toadstools. My large toadstool that i could not take out as it's attached to the rock, looks very bad. I'm thinking i may have to cut it off the rock today and toss it before it nukes my tank. Right now it's dark gray and completely leaned over on it's side. No sight of digitate hydroids, though i think i see some colonial hydroids.

Ive been getting more Cuc and more wrasses back in my tank. Ive seen my 6 line pick at them but tbeyre not a favorite food or anything like that.

Just got peppermint shrimp in. So we’ll seeif they do anything.

I tend to feed heavy so i thinj something got out of control
