I’m not new to reef keeping. I worked at a large retail aquarium store in suburban Philadelphia over 45 years ago. I established a aquarium maintenance business with a co-worker. I kept a fish only and then mixed reef tank in the 80s. Things have certainly changed. Above all, we are all responsible to maintain the best water quality we can for the inhabitants of our aquariums. I recently set up a Reefer 350. Running Jaebo DCS 12000 w two MP 40s and Skimz in sump skimmer. Using R/O, D/I water. I seeded the tank almost two weeks ago using Dr. Tim’s. I also added four small tank raised clowns to help establish the tank. Not using the lights and the skimmer has not yet begun to obtain skimmate.

All was well, UNTIL, one of the clowns stopped eating. Respiration has increased as well, I suspect ammonia poisoning at this point although I haven’t tested. Knowing what I know about establishing a biological filtration system I doubt there is much I can do. Back in the day we established tanks using black mollies. (Or 99 cent damsels). Would welcome feedback.

Very excited about getting back into this. It’s been a dream of mine for far too long and I am thrilled to be a part of the community and hopefully contribute my two cents when I can.

Welcome!
Sounds as though you have guessed the issue with your clown.
Water changes.

Welcome to r2r! We will be glad to get your two cents when you can chime in. All those years of knowledge will be a wonderful asset!

As for your problem, they sell bacteria to help instant cycle. Or another option is to get an ammonia neutralizer for the time being.

Welcome! Sorry to hear about the clownfish. Generally from what I read setting up my tank we don't use fish much anymore to start the cycle. Lots of bottle option and lots of patience! Hope the little guy pulls through, can't wait to see pics of the tank!
