Looking for a decent hob skimmer for our 125 reef. On a budget so Id like to not spend a ton. I thought about the IceCap K1 160, but don't see a hob option for it? It may not be possible to run it on the tank.

No sump on our tank. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Sold my Fluval FX Canisters so now I've got $320-$350 to work with for a skimmer.

Is the Reef Octopus 2000 the best to get? Was gonna grab it if so.

Any negatives? Thanks!

ran the 1000 for 4 years on my first tank donated it to my lfs and it's still being used 10 years later solid products

I am running the ReefOcto 2000 on a new 75 gallon. It has just broken in. It's a little noisy imo and the pump flow ins't adjustable like on the DC IceCap unit. I went with it because it's the largest hob I could find and the tank in going to be sps.

Strange...I run the Icekap K3-250 and found it louder then my friends Reef Octo.....LOL

EDIT: But both are pretty darn quiet regardless

Look out for a used lifereef, best skimmer I've ever owned. I got mine on eBay years ago for less than $200. You can use any pump you want and if it's not the HOB model call Jeff, the owner of lifereef, and he will sell you the few parts needed to make it one. As a benefit very easily upgradable for a larger tank. I think the 24 inch model is good for 200 gallons.

It's likely noisy to me considering this is my first HOB experience. I've owned a lot of skimmers but they've always been in a cabinet with a sump.

Ended up with an Aquatop Xyclone Hob skimmer. Been doing a really good job so far, just lots of bubbles
