HOB Skimmer in a Refugium?

I was wondering if a hob skimmer could be used in a refugium? The reason I'm asking is because my Reef Octopus hob skimmer is fairly new and I was considering going to a refugium. What size refugium would you recommend for a 65 gallon tank? Any good quality refugium complete kits worth getting? Thanks

Hi Bryon,

You can hang a skimmer on the side of a sump and even a refugium, however with a live refugium, the skimmer will pull out alot of the copepods, which are one of the reasons you would want a refugium. Some issues I experienced when I hung a HOB skimmer on my sump was issues with water level and he noise of the "waterfall". Just something to keep in mind.

The kit you choose depends on how much room you have, what you want to put in the refugium, etc (live goods, equipment, etc). I assume you are talking about a refugium in terms of a live refugium- an area in an aquarium system where microorganisms can live and breed without predators, as opposed to a sump. You may wish to look at a unit from Precision Marine such as the Precision Marine Refugium R24.

So could I keep the skimmer in my display tank and run a refugium as a pod breeder. Throw in some good algae, live rock, and live pods.

I have a 55 with 10 gal refugium. I run a remora aqua c hang on in the first section of my sump. 2ng section is the refugium, then the last is my pump. I have one of the fatest blue martins around, so a skimmer pulling out pods is not an issue. Everyone that has a refugium still runs a skimmer. Water level.. Not issue once it is running doesn't draw more or less water that is constant. Water noise is no more than that of my pumps which is almost non existent.

Like I said I run skimmer and incoming water into 1st section then a under then over divider to the refugium. Next is the refugium with a under then over divider. Into pump section with some live rock.

Some run pump section in the middle with incoming water and ref. on one side of the pump. On the other side of the pump they have their refugium that gets feed by some of the pump out water via a split off main pump out pipe into the ref.
