When I was actively teaching coral reef biology for scuba divers, I remember talking about corals only receiving around 6 hours, of truly high level natural light, per day. Since, in our reef aquariums, modern light fixtures can be adjusted to accelerate growth, I have decided to only run my lights for 6 hours per day. Does anyone do the same, and if so, what results did you get? I would think, 6 hours of light, as opposed to 10-12 hours, would help eliminate the growth of any nuisance algae.
