You could try raising your prices. Many reefers perceive higher value when the price tag goes up.
I tend to think of "perceived value" when thinking of services like house painting and not so much for purchasing a product. I have no problem finding reefers that like a bargain.
Cheers! Mark

Funny I asked a local guy to sell me a frag for $10 than he listed it on R2R since he didn’t have to ship it and he was so upset it was like I kicked his dog or something. Guess some people just love packing and shipping

Hey Daddy-O, I would buy $300 worth of corals and pay for shipping if you will ship a batch to southern CA. Just throw them in an overnight box. Let me know.

North Cali to south Cali doesn’t seem so bad Daddy-O, I think you should expand your locals only horizon, lol! I’m down in Miami where there is great abundance of reefers and LFS and I cant move my stuff enough. I haven’t shipped either but I think I could do Florida.

I hope these prices are out there when I get my tank up and running. I am getting back into reefing and looking at the prices of coral and shipping is out rages, especially being retired. 15 to 20 years ago prices and shipping wasn't this high (not talking about the prices on this thread).
The nearest LFS is 80 miles away.

One cool aspect of this hobby is that if you do it right and have a little luck, you can offset the cost by selling coral. At some point, you just have to get rid of coral because it grows into other corals and something dies. This is where I’m at. My rack is full (I do mostly SPS) and I need to make more cuts almost weekly.
I’ve noticed that basically nobody is buying SPS coral on my local forum......at least from me. In years past, there were a lot more buyers. That is the only place I try to sell stuff, because I don’t want to ship. I have a series of questions.........

  • Do we just not have a lot of users on my local forum?
  • Is SPS out of fashion?
  • Less people in the hobby in general?
  • Are my prices high, or frags too small, or am I just a jerk? I can change the first two. I cut big frags at 1 inch plus, usually with branches. I try to really hook people up without giving away the farm.
  • Should I take individual WYSIWYG pics of frags. Not a big deal, but time consuming.
  • Should I sell on Facebook (although I heard they’re cracking down on live animal sales)? I’m not on Facebook.
  • Should I suck it up and get better at shipping? Then I could sell on Instagram and R2R. I’ve had pretty poor survival rates when I’ve tried shipping in the past (plus, overnight shipping is crazy expensive).
  • Do any LFS buy frags in bulk?

Thanks for reading. Looking forward to hearing what you have to say.
So I guess part of the answer to your question is price. As you can see from the responses, some of our fellow reefers are very price conscious. What if you offer a couple frags really cheap (the ones that grow like weeds in your system) to get reefers to you place and once they see what you have, they may buy more?
Cheers! Mark

This is what I posted to my local forum recently to give you an idea of my prices. Plus, I offer 20% off these prices fairly often. Please don’t consider this a for sale posting, I’m just trying to get an idea if I’m doing something wrong. You can see almost all of these on my build thread.

The customer pays shipping so that shouldn't concern you too much. At those prices (both of you) I believe most people would be more than willing to pay shipping for multiple frags. The only problem is the cost of shipping supplies. So will you make any money after paying for those?

I am in Southern CA and sell all of my frags to a local wholesaler for cash in some cases and for store credit in others. The biggest point for me is that he takes everything i bring him. I typically go there every 4-6 weeks with everything i want to get rid of. This also happens to correspond to a reasonable quarantine time for the stuff i bring back. While i would never pay $500+ cash for a fish , l dont mind trading this amount of frags for the same fish...

We will leave the porch light on for you!
But you know, for us this is a hobby. It is not a business. I don't think it should not be about greed! It should be about sharing these beauties that the ocean provides. The little bit of money we get (we trade a lot of corals too) pays for supplies/electricity and nicer corals to make available.
I have a 16 year old son and he loves to frag corals. He puts his phone away drops his guard and we talk for hours. He helps package corals up and gets a big chunk of the sales.
I have a bit of OCD and need to be always doing something. This hobby works for me. With 6 tanks packed to the limits with coral, there is always maint. to be done and if you keep up on the maint. you can produce frags pretty fast.
Cheers! Mark

Honestly both of these sellers are pricing 50% and 30% of market respectively. If they shipped they could each get around 100$ per frag on the wd. I wish similar deals were available in Seattle but most sellers here want 80% of retail and the better ones with highly desirable frags and food pictures get it. At some point you start talking real money and it’s probably worth the pucker factor.
