DISCLAIMER: This will not be scientific in any way but will rely on honest answers!

Yesterday I was thinking about coral growth and how one reefer might grow a certain type of coral faster than another. Nothing to be ashamed of as some people just have a "blue thumb" if you will. Additionally some people have all the right pieces of equipment in place or have been keeping reef tanks a lot longer. But just for the fun of it, let's compare notes!

How fast or slow do these corals grow for you in a 6 month average?

Acropora:
(inches)

Montipora: (inches)

Zoanthids: (polyps)

Mushrooms: (polyps)

Euphyllia: (heads)

Leathers: (inches)

*Remember this is a 6 month average

This was 6 months growth on a tank I had in 2008!

Does anyone think water volume helps growth assuming both tanks are stable? I went from a 75 to a 200 gallon system same parameters and way better growth. Also, I think tank maturity has a lot to do with growth.

Euphyllia and Zoas/Palys seems to grow pretty quick. Mushrooms, monti, chalice seems to be pretty slow

Water chemistry looks good. PAR also looks good...

I picked slow as compared to other I see. My acro’s 1/4”-1/2” per month. Could I get them to grow faster probably if I had thousands of dollars to spend on top of the line equipment and controllers like the people who get mega growth.

My Euphillia - hammers, torches, and frogspawn - each probably double in number of heads every 6 months. Pretty cool.
My Softies - toadstools, tree corals, xenia, GSP - all grow way way too fast. REGRET IS IMMINENT.
My Zoanthids - no growth at all. Drives me nuts!
My Acros & SPS - Probably <1" every six months. Wish I could get them to grow faster! Encrusting also seems to happen 1.5X faster than upward limb growth.

After established my corals are:
Acropora: 1/8" per month very slow
Leathers : 1+" per month
Birdsnest: 1+" per month
Euphyilla: varies but on my small colonies 1head a month , large colonies 3+ heads per month .
Zoas: seem to grow at varying rates..... some only 2 heads a month and others are doubling in colony size every month or 2....
Monti plates: too fast....always cutting it back and giving away.
Algea: reasonably fast but the clean up crew is just a good!

Parameters are pretty standard with 8.4 all. 8.3 ph. Salt is 35 , lighting a little weak running only 4 t5s on a 48" 75 gallon. Could be why my acropora is so slow. Also always have a bit of phosphate at 0.15. Aqua clear 110 filter and RO 2000 HOB skimmer, no sump
