How heavy can an aquarium hood be?

Made this for a buddy - 48x24 to sit on top of a 120g.

it is all 1x10 lumber, and there’s 3” where the 1x10s overlap, for aesthetic and durability.

I am worried it’s too heavy- but I don’t know how else it would have been lighter, only if I used particle board but that’s awfully flexible.

any rough idea of how much hoods should weigh, or stories of them smashing the glass…? Don’t want to cause any harm to buddy’s tank

Usually there are several different rimmed tank setups with large/heavy canopys/hoods. They are obviously made to disperse the weight around the top rim of the tank evenly. I ran a 75 and a 45 that had fairly heavy canopy/hoods. I suppose I would ask how heavy is it? Also is this a "rimmed" tank or a different style? Best of luck. Looks nice btw :)

It is rimmed. Has the bar that goes front to back along the middle. My supports on the inside are the 4 corners and the bar across the middle

Also thank you, focused on the information I missed the nod to craftsmanship. I had a lot of fun making it, thinking about selling them to local reefers if they need one. They’re very expensive new

i don’t have a good way to weigh it, but it’s probably 40-50 pounds judging by my man strength and how I could carry it and only do a few curls on the way out to the truck

Personally I think it will be ok as long as it seats nicely and even. Take your time and go slow,also make sure the tank is very level before trying it. I would obviously leave it up to you and your friend but I think you'll be alright. Play it safe and best of luck. I think my 75 canopy was about 40lbs..
