Hi folks! So, my aquarium (RS Reefer 525xl) started leaking from the top right front corner. I lost about 2 inches from the top of the tank. Better to be safe than sorry, and thinking it's just a matter of time that the tank is going to fail, I filled several Brute cans with the tank water, and rocks, and also filled a 40g tank with tank water and rocks and transfered the fish to that tank. I have purchased a 125g tank for a replacement. I would like to make as much new water as possible rather than using the old tank water that has been sitting in the brutes for several days now. So my question is how about what percentage of water can be old tank water and what amount can be new?

Thanks

Just match all the parameters and you could use all new water.. it may require dosing to get the ALK and MAG where it needs to be though.. are you keeping corals as well. If so, what kinda.. some tend to be a bit more sensitive to large changes in ALK, NO3, PO4…

I just upgrade from a 75 gallon to a 170 gallon. I did exactly what is being said above. I used 100% new saltwater making sure my parameters matched the old water. I moved over the live rock and just dumped the fish, inverts and corals in. Everything did great. The corals opened right up.

Yuu can get long ratcheting clamps to help prolong the life of the tank while you setup a new one. There are posts on this from others that were in your exact situation
