How to be a happy reefer

I feel like all the reefers at my LFS are stoned and have big smiles all the time. Seems like a correlation.
I know mine are. There are gaps of time where not a single employee is to be found in the store, and they all suddenly show up accompanied by the unmistakable scent of weed. I mean, they are reefers after all.

Been in aquariums for a couple decades with fresh and salt. What is difficult now is that there seems to be less variety in stock and the quality doesn’t seem to be there. That and the loss of live rock has made things more difficult.

This seems inverse with freshwater where there’s never been more variety and most fish are pretty good shape.

My challenges with my latest tank have been fairly minor in comparison to some. But still challenging. Patience is the key, but that’s most tough when you feel thing crashing.

When I first got into the hobby, I did a lot of DIY. I didn’t have the money for fancy new things so I built things myself. Some were successes, others failures. But I got the most joy out of the process of building.

Today, I’m much less able to get around. I have a better job, an amazing wife, and more patience. So I slowly built my current system, piece by piece. And now I get the satisfaction of watching the critters big and small in my tank.

In this hobby, Reefers get to vicariously live through other successful reefers!

Which is great if they can do that without feeling like they are a failure with their own tank.

I’m happy today. Thought for 3 days my yellow tang was dead since he stopped appearing on my remote web cam.

Turns out he was just constantly fighting his reflection in a tank corner my cam could not see.

Little victories!

Was the yellow tang victorious?

I don't like to spend a lot on corals. I mostly buy a couple pieces at the ARC auctions when they come up, because I can do local pick up. I won't go higher than $25, usually can get something for much less.

I go into it figuring half of any new corals won't make it. When most or all of them live and grow, I call that a win!

I noticed late last night that my Elegance that lives in the far back corner of my tank decided to go on walk about. So while I was rectifying that issue I accidentally fragged my montipora digitata colony. It broke perfectly into two colonies so now I have two.

That’s why R2R exists - to help all reefers!
