How to stop sand the from moving?

I’m getting ready to move my fish over to a new aquarium ( a Red Sea Max Nano G2 XXL) in the next week or so, but I’m having a real problem keeping the sand in from moving.

It’s obviously the powerhead doing it (a Red Sea ReefWave 25).

The powerhead is currently running the programme shown below, but that clearly is too powerful.



The sand is Cariasea Live Sand Fiji Pink. Does anybody have any suggestions or recommended powerhead settings?

Many ways to accomplish your goal…my favorite was adding a larger grain argonite gravel to those areas. Looks more natural to me, with different sizes of sand.

A couple of answers: new sand will move around in a new tank, in time the bacteria and micro organisms and bio film will weigh it down so it doesn’t shift so easily. Second answer is to add another powerhead on the opposite side so the flows meet and bounce and create random flow patterns, rather than linear one way flow which is more prone to moving the sand around.

I have had this problem with the "random" setting on different types of wave makers. Maybe try a simple sine pulse?

All the powerheads in my tank point twords the waters surface. This creates plenty of flow but doesn't directly blast the sand. And I have 5 of different flow rate powerheads plus two returns on Sea Swirls.

Exactly…but still will require some trial and error with your powerheads like others have mentioned.

I don’t think so, it’s almost right at the top of the glass. I probably can’t get it any higher and I’ve angled away from the sand as much as I can
