How to stop tank from girgleing

Forgot what they call the piece I can make to stop my tank from girgleing in the overflow box. Please help.

Before spending money, consider a solution instead of a band-aid. None of those solutions may work all the way. And a gravity drain should be silent-running all by itself.

Anecdote: My work desk is next to my tank, so the gurgling most folks seem to tolerate OK wasn't cutting it. My drain boxes came with maggies, I built my own, I built a durso...at best they helped "a little". Of course, YMMV... :) ;)

It may be the case that you are running too much flow through your drain and that is the cause of the noise.

Find a way to measure the flow through the drain.

For example:

• Use a container of known volume placed under the drain or return.
• Time how long to fill.
• Convert volume of container and time to gallons and hours.
• See if you're beyond the needed flow rate for your sump applications.

In most cases, your needed flow rate can be calulated as:

[Display Volume] x2 = [Actual Flow Rate Thru Sump]

...or up to x4​

I've done x5 in some cases, but more than that is usually just wasteful....and annoying. ;) :p


It's helpful to know what your actual flow rate is anyway, so you might wanna measure regardless of what you do with the drain/noise. :)

(Note, pump and drain flow-ratings are not the same as what I'm talking about.)
