It takes a lot to kill these off.
Cut the food source and the will shrink back but the base doesn't die.
They can live quite a long time without food but your tank will pay the price.

Worded poorly on my part, obviously they didn't die off if they popped back up when feeding again. :)

What do you mean by the last statement "your tank will pay the price"?

If you cut off the food source you will be cutting off the food to the coral
It is as I say a double edge sword

I see what you're saying now. I don't feed corals anymore. Just the fish and let the corals fend for themselves. The powdered coral foods where the only ones that caused the hydroid outbreaks.

Hydroids just love the small particulate food but acros also love it :-)

Should have been more specific on that sorry, I meant in reference to the hydroids they are not affected by freshwater dips.

Funny as time goes on how things change through study. Now I can say it is one of the easier things to rid of :)

Ya Alex you know I actually have been thinking of writing up the current method taking care of hydroids. So much more information has been put together. Now I just need to get it done. I would like to incorporate a powerpoint for ease of creating but not sure how that would fit in with the audience. This way I can share the information across multiple students (college) and aquarium owners here on R2R.

I'd signed to reed this, there's nothing on the Webb about hidroids. This stuff is overtaking all my corals now.

Hi twilliard, how can I remove this branching hydroid? It seems to multiply a lot after I feeding Exta reef chili since my tank going fallow? Thank you!
