HYDROS Black Friday sale?

I have several decades of experience in software, hardware, and firmware design, and ran my own DIY modular controller platform for many years. I’ve designed multiple controller systems and have been involved in aquarium monitoring and automation projects for almost 30 years. Around 2022 I decided my home built system was dated and that it made more sense to move to a commercial platform than to rebuild.

Neptune was off the table, so the choice was essentially GHL vs. Hydros. I spent time on your site trying to understand Hydros, the control options and how the pieces fit together. I specifically tried to understand where Hydros IV fit in, what was needed, and how it worked compared to the GHL KH Director. I couldn’t get a clear answer from your own materials. All that I got was marketing platitudes, buzzwords, glossy photos, and graphics, but no substance or concrete information.

Your own forums and this one are full of posts from people asking basic questions that should be answered by your product documentation and website. I have pointed this out repeatedly over the years and specifically pointed to the lack of a comprehensive product matrix that lays out models, capabilities, requirements, and differences. It is a marketing staple Connor, not a joke. That a customer had to build one for you and post it here is ridiculous.

So, responding to criticism of very real, systemic marketing and documentation failures with laughing emojis does not fix the problem, it makes CV look silly. It also goes a long way to validation of my decision to avoid your products and gives context to other aspects of the product line and functionality.

As mentioned, the sale went live last night. I got everything from SaltwaterAquarium.com . They have great CS and selection. They also offer a discount program on non-sale items for first responders and military which says a lot about the brand. BRS doesn't sale HYDROS because of a MAP pricing disagreement that they had so I have been shopping SaltwaterAquarium lately.

I ended up picking up a Kraken and an XP8 with some various cables to connect to the used X4 I got on here. @Connor At CoralVue (sorry, I didn't know who else to tag @CoralVue 😂) My dreams were once again shattered by the absence of the MAVEN though (I knew it wasn't going to happen).

Another Bonus for shopping with SaltwaterAquarium, they have "freebies" for a bunch of different price ranges depending on your cart total. So I got a Hanna Nitrate LR checker that I've been thinking about picking up but didn't really want to spend the extra money for.
Another place to keep an eye on is the outlet. Additional 30% off using the code on some items: https://store.coralvue.com/
I check this daily but it rarely changes. But it is a great spot to check👍🏼

Of course it doesn’t, you are a die hard fan that never misses an opportunity to weave a positive response to anything negative about Hydros or CV. Maybe (honestly) they should be paying you instead of whoever is currently in charge of their marketing 😀

You just proved my point, not refuted it. The product offering is a jumbled mess of features and arbitrary product names for new users to navigate just to make a basic purchase, and CV has failed to make it clear.

No need to convince me. I’m not a customer and won’t be. I was a prospective customer once, cash in hand ready to buy. But when the only way to understand the lineup was to go dive down a rabbit hole and come out the other side still confused at the lack of detailed information, I moved on and am glad that I did. Partly because I think it is seat of the pants marketing and R&D, but mostly due to the hard cloud dependence.

No hate, just stunned at the randomness of design and marketing choices and product arc. I can’t take them seriously and see it more of a seat of the pants, poorly thought out “yeah we should cash in on controllers too” ecosystem with focus on cute names and platitudes instead of refined detail and a clear roadmap. The Maven mess reinforces thst idea.
Bro really said no hate💀 getting rage baited on a post from someone asking about a hydros sale is crazy. Whats the point of even commenting in the first place?

Proud owner of kraken, x10, x4 and xp8. Wont ever use another collective due to efficiency, ease of use, etc. Dont really see how you can be such a hater. Over the names? Get a grip. Mad over the delayed mavin? Get a grip, who else has done a mass tester at this size and allows it to be connected to their collective. All nonsense

Bro?
Rage baited?
Point of commenting?

This is a public forum and a conversation. I have not been “baited” and there is no rage. But using your own logic and wording, why then would you even bother responding to me in the first place? Is it that your opinion is more valid than mine?

I am happy that you are happy and the system is perfect for you. We assign value differently. is that a problem?

Get a grip? So you are suggesting that because our opinions differ, I need to seek psychiatric help?

In any case, the tester that you are extolling the virtues of does not exist yet.

Secondly, what exactly does “connected to their collective” actually mean? I.E, what is novel vs other systems? Please be specific.

GHL and Neptune have actual shipping, working automated testing devices that connect directly to their ecosystems and can be used for various control automation. Some people like them, some do not. No different than the conversation here.

Moreover, there are numerous other automated testing devices that can be used for direct control or as inputs to other automation systems.

I don’t “hate” Hydros or CoralVue. I simply don’t care for several aspects of their ecosystem or marketing and I don’t particularly care for the way that they communicate. I wish them nothing but success and hope they are open to feedback from people like you and me, positive or negative.

But in the end, even if I did “hate” them, would it not be my right to do so for whatever reasons that suit me? Do I not have as much right to articulate my opinion as you do yours?

Happy Reefing

Sorry to bring back an older post but I felt the need since i finally found someone who was thinking the same as me.
Ive been an Automation Engineer for 27 years in the oil and Gas sector. The systems ive designed have made 1100 oil wells at one time talk to each other and control and entire field. In short id like to think i know something about automation and how it works and what to expect. The hydros website is the most confusing crap ever and makes zero sense, answers no questions at all and to be honest i dont think they really even know how their product works. I can do more for way less if i just plug in a plc and program it. The downfall is then i have to come up with a SCADA software to monitor it. I think they need more activity in terms of marketing and just overall helping people out.
For instance if you want to find out what the difference is between the X10 and the Blenny youll have to research at the library of congress to get a full breakdown. Most users will never figure it out. When you do youll be ticked to see they are charging $500 more for 3 stepper motors and 2 extra I/O ports.

The 4 stepper motors on the pumps in the X10 are precision motors and the flow rate can be set from .1 to 100ml a minute in .1 increments. The 4 pumps on the Blenny and also the 2 on the Minnow are you regular DC motors with brushes and commutator so they will not be as accurate. They also only can be set to one of three flow rates which are 25, 40 or 55ml a minute which is fine for most uses but if you want to dispense something like alkalinity reagent then you will need a pump that will do about 2ml a minute and is a precision pump. Also you will get more accurate results if you also use a precision pump for the fill pump to get a more accurate test sample volume to add the reagent to. It really depends on what you want to use them for as to which one you use. The X10 has been out longer. The Minnow and Blenny are newer controllers. The Minnow uses the same pumps as the Blenny but there are only 2 of them so if you don't need the extra 2 pumps or the drive ports on the Blenny then the Minnow will work for you. Also the X10 has a salinity port and a pH port which the Blenny does not have. I used a X10 with an iV for quite some time as a stand alone alkalinity tester and also for dosing All For Reef and a KH buffer based on the test results. It is now a part of my collective but I still use it for alkalinity testing but have another X10 for dosing All For Reef and a KH buffer based on the test results.

You do realize that by jumping in and laying everything out that isn’t clearly conveyed in their sprawling but useless marketing website… you are repeatedly making our point.

Their marketing is ridiculously bad. People shouldn’t have to stumble upon you are Jeff for simple answers.

The info I posted is on their website under the specific controller it pertains to. Below is one from the X10 in the dosing pump section for the controller. The second one is from their website for the Blenny at the dosing pump section. It shows the different speeds. The speeds with the - sign are in the reverse direction. In fact when using a pump as the fill pump for an iV it does run in both directions at different sequences in the drain and fill during the test. That is done so if you want you can dump the initial drain using the drain pump but the second drain after the first fill is drained using the fill pump back to where the fill pump draws from the tank. this will minimize the amount of make you will need to add for each test is you dump the drain. I don't do that the drain pump goes back to the sump also.

The price difference is about $10/motor probably less depending on quantity they are buying. I buy tons of these things all the time. The extra I/o ports which is what the salinity and PH ports are connected to are more than likely on the control board already and they just dont have them activated so the plugs are maybe $.50 each. So in short they add $31 and charge you $500 extra......

The circuitry for the ph and conductivity probes is only on the x10 board and isnt trivial. Both of these interfaces use daughter cards for physical isolation as well as application specific isolation chips that isolate the power and data planes between the processor and port interface. More is covered here: https://www.coralvuehydros.com/probe-ports/probe-port-explained/ Those circuits add cost. As well as for the interface needed between a standard DC doser (blenny) and a stepper doser (x10), the circuitry isn’t the same. Hydros uses a higher end stepper driver IC on the X10 board which adds additional cost. Now yes the parts themselves aren’t crazy expensive by themselves but they add up.

Also the X10 comes with a pH probe and temp probe, which the blenny does not. So that alone is $80-90 of the cost difference.

And hydros isn’t making thousands of units so volume discounts on pumps aren’t as likely as you’d think.
