i have a couple of malawi freshwater tanks and my yellow and blue labs are sand sifting like gobys
They often do and also redecorate the tank their way, moving rocks and plants
Get a geophagus Jurapari and you'll see the best sand sifter

One of the most important rules of cichlids is that you do not decide how the tank looks - they do.
Between looking for food, nesting, and building territories cichlids will completely rescape a tank. Mbunas are definitely a great example, as are geos and even oscars.
