ID on this strange red growth?

This thing is about 1" tall and has taken about 6 months to grow to that size.
Any ideas as to what it is?

Looks like a sponge.

It does not really appear porous in any way like most sponges I have seen.

I'd say sponge, I've had one that looked similar.
