i was thinking the other day if yellow belly tangs show yellow bellies when they are about an inch in size, i have never seen one that small before

Very faint yellow ... I mean VERY faint ... My LFS had a whole bunch of babies from a recent shipment (they are definitely Yellow Bellies) ... along with quite a few adults. :)

thanks for clearing that up so if they were in a school of regular blue tangs u would not be able to tell the difference

I know this is an old thread - but no, not likely. I hear yellow belly regals are a deeper blue than are regular hippo tangs, but as juveniles I would guess they're nearly indistinguishable.

Talk about raising the old thread...but since you have...
anyone ever have success with the tiny tangs? I went through a couple med size before I was successful and havery had mine for about four years now but it was 3" when I got it. Not a gumball

My first regular regal tang was about the size of a quarter when I got her - she was tough as nails I had her for two years until flukes got my angels... and poor Dory as well. I was very sad, I had grown her from a little nugget!

12 years in the hobby and never had flukes. Wiped out a Passer, Queen and Emperor angel in one week as well as poor Dory. My Squirrel, Banana Wrasse, Red Coris Wrasse, Cleaner Wrasse, Magnificent Foxface and Maroon clown were unaffected (or at least survived and did not appear affected). Very, very sad.

I ordered a 2.5" Yellow belly last night I should hopefully get it last week. We will see how it goes. But I could NOT keep a Hippo alive that was between 2.5-5 inches in size when I bought it. Whenever I tried to buy one from another hobbyist, it had HORRIBLE HLLE and I decided against purchasing. In the two years I had mine, she had ZERO HLLE.
