Hi all, some may remember me, was a member in 2014. Anyway I haven't had a tank for a while now. Lately I'm really missing it. Still have all my equipment and asuming it works I plan on starting 2 small reefs. One is 8g cube other is 56g, I plan on setting up the nano first. So I have a hook up on water but what I really need is the hook up on a mantis shrimp. Love these little guys, gonodactylus smithii specifically. Also need some softies an one small nano fish. I plan on attending the meeting at emerald bay an renew my membership. Some if you have any mantis, fish, or softies to trade or sell please post. Thx.

So i got my tank up an running. But none of my heaters seem to work. If anyone has a small heater they dont need that would be great. Only 8 gallons so i doesnt have to be big. I'll be at meeting if someone can bring one.

So i had the 8g running two weeks now. Got the water tested today an the nitrite an amonia was high, but the nitrates where over 200 ppm. I got the original water from an established reef. His nitrate level is less than 10 ppm. So i was thinking why is the nitrate so high. Tank only has one damsel.

Few years ago my dad won a ton of free food from an omega one photo contest. I still had 2 un opened cans of marine flakes. Today i noticed the exp date was right at three years ago, the damsel ate what i put in btw. Could this old food be where the high nitrates are coming from?

Could be a possibility. So this was an existing setup? Did it had a deep sandbed before?

The tank was my old biocube. It hadnt been used for a while. I washed it out with freshwater, even the bio balls an overflow. Sand came from same established reef the water came from, an it isnt deep less than a inch. Did 2 gallon change after testing an plan on doing at least two 2 gallon changes tomorrow.

Could be when you moved the sand and disturbed everything up within the sandbed.
