welcome to the party! Its interesting that the egg crate is staggered in height... its not really effective as a baffle so im not sure what advantages there are with that. I also think its an algae scrubber. Throw a light on it a big chunk of chaeto in it, and let it grow and grow. Water needs to flow through the unit, tough to say exactly how to plumb it based on pics.

Its 20x12 and im not sure how it went into the system I know its some type of filter or refugium but..

Welcome. As someone mentioned, it looks like an algae scrubber. Not sure why the eggcrate baffles are so close to each other. Or why there are baffles made in the first place.
