I was wondering if there are any expert tax people out there.
Here is my situation. I have a Virginia license. This past year I've been working in Florida, which doesn't have a state income tax.
My question is do I have to file in VA or FL. Because if I have to file in VA then I have to pay an income tax right?
Sorry if this sounds all nooby, but this is my first time...so be gentle!
Thanks

I'm not an expert but I will take an educated guess that the answer lies in the Florida State Income Tax Code There is probably a definition contained therein for "residency." It will most likley depend on the type and quality of your contacts with each state. For example, do you own a home in VA? Is your car insured there? Where do you ge your mail?

I do believe that you are considered a Florida resident if you have resided in the state for more than 6 months.

Also be careful with that VA license. As a resident you are required to have a valid state or Florida DL as well as Florida Insurance

It will depend on if you made any income in both states. For instance, I live in Washington, which has no income tax, but I sometimes work in Idaho, where there is an income tax. When I do, I have to file my normal Federal and Idaho.

Federal is federal. I think you may have to file state in VA and can ignore FL, since they have no state taxes there.
