Introduced Clownfish

Hi all,

Thanks so some great advice on here, we added 2 juvenile clownfish on Sunday to the start of our reef tank along with some CUC. So far, we are 0 on ammonia and nitrite, and around .5 for nitrate. I am assuming the nitrate is up due to food/waste. I am in no means in any hurry, should we be waiting to all are flatlined before adding something for the fish to host?

No, as long as the tank was already cycled, no need for the nitrate to 0 out.

In fact, you never really want nitrate to 0 out unless you run a ULNS.

Also, might have been better for the hosting coral/anemone to have been introduced first so it gets its footing first before two fish just start rubbing on it :beaming-face-with-smiling-eyes:

I would wait on an anemone until the tank is more mature! I tried a nem earlier than recommended and lost him. Now that my tank is more mature Ive got multiple anemones! Also clowns will literally host anything including return outlets and wavemakers, goofy fish for sure

Lol that does make sense, I just never saw an article or talked to anyone that said add coral first, newbie here lol

It's not a rule or anything, but I find it easier to get clowns to host that way.

They're more likely to host something that is fluffy and out rather than something shriveled up from acclimating

It really makes sense, wish I had talked to you before hand LOL

On introduction you will see a small load in which ammonia and nitrate will rise and fall. Dont worry about testing nitrite in saltwater . You likely have an API kit with nitrite test included.
Skip host and allow tank to mature and stabilized at least 4 months before any anemone or similar is introduced. Take the time to perfect water and have it ready for some cool corals moving forward

Thank you! We actually have some GSP coming through so I’m thinking that will work fine for them :)

We actually have some GSP coming through on the rock so thinking that will work for a while :)
