Is it ok to cut part of sump to fit a skimmer?

I am asking for my cousin he has a Trigger Sump 20 and his skimmer just a tad too big. He wants to put in in refuge area. He wants to file it down, I don't see a problem with it.

People custom make sumps all the time. I don't see an issue as long as it doesn't hinder flow.
