Agree with @143MPCo , either one safe. I'm not aware of any PVC plumbing fixture that is not safe for our tanks.

However, what are you doing putting a value on the drain line. If you need to meter waterflow, you're safer valving the return line to the DT.

for my main drain line, I only have a spear gated valve. I would like a union of some sort before the gate valve for maintenance purpose.
