KH: 14dKH
SAL: 1.024
TEMP: 79
Mg: 1170
pH: 7.8
NO2: 0
NO3: 0.20
PO4: 0.25
AMMONIA: 0.20

I was told NO3 should be no higher than 0.20.

None of your animals require DkH that high. If that level is from your salt mix I would suggest you get another brand if you can. If you are dosing or have a calcium reactor I would shut it off for now.

I normally measure in meq/L which would be 5. I think that's a good number, no? I also got a new test kit so I may have made an error. I'll check it with my other test and use the new one again.
No dosing of anything.
Thank you

5 meq/l is 14 dkh.
That be a bad number
8dkh is a good number

Also nitrate at .2 with phosphate at .25
That’s a bad mix as well

I would run nitrate at 5-10ppm with a phosphate of 0.25
That would be a good number.

No?

What test kit are you using?
Why do you have ammonia of 0.2?
What salt do you use?

Red sea salt, red sea test kit and API Master Test Kit... I use both if something is off.

I would raise magnesium. Probably all you need to do is bring up the salinity, which I expect is low. Nitrate is low too. I might feed more.

Thank you...I'm newish to this so please dont be offended by the next question
I thought nitrate was supposed to be as low as possible? I was told no higher than .20.
And is 5 meq/L a good number for KH?

Are you sure they didn't tell you no higher than 20 nitrate? I don't think I know any reefers that purposeless aim for nitrates less than 0.20. That's asking for disaster in most non established reefs.

I have a sally lightfoot, hermitcrab, anemone shrimp, snails an anemone (common purple) and mushrooms

since u only have anemones and soft, the Mg should be at like 1280.. a little more? is fine. 14dKH is way too high... I would say like 9dKH MAX 12dKH although i wouldn't.
also the ammonia should be at 0 not even
0.01... just plain 0.
nitrate should be at like 1-5 but your corals aren't sensitive sps so it can go to? like 7 or 8. also ppl only go for 0 NO3 in ULNS. but control the Algae.

Alrighty that info makes me feel better! My parameters have all been good except the nitrate at 0.20 (or so I thought )
What is the disaster with nitrates below 0.20? I'm trying to learn as much as possible about the chemistry. Can you point me in the direction of some reef chemistry for dummies?

Nitrate? I recommend 2-10 ppm as a good range.

lol

The main concern is dinos may take hold and are a terrible pest.

There is an article sticky at the top of this chemistry forum with articles. The beginner series listed there may be a good place to start, but the nitrate suggestions in it are outdated.

KH: 14dKH
SAL: 1.024
TEMP: 79
Mg: 1170
pH: 7.8
NO2: 0
NO3: 0.20
PO4: 0.25

Bringing up the salinity will, as I suggested, raise the magnesium to appropriate levels.

I'd also consider upgrading to some better test kits. The API kits will give you a general ballpark idea of your numbers but I've found them to be lacking in resolution. Salifert makes decent kits at a reasonable price.
