Is this caused by shadowing?

Most of my acros have bases like this. Is it because the part does not reached by lights? They are growing, has colors and polyp extensions. Just wondering if it is normal and if there is something I could do about it.

Seems to vary. Most of mine keep tissue underneath; it is just thin, lightly colored and dry usually. But I feel like I have had a few colonies with just bare skeleton.

Keep this picture for some reference to see if the tissue is continuing to recede though. This is NOT an aefw pattern.

Curious if others have contrary thoughts about this base recession.

@C. Eymann has seen a colony or two. Whadya make of this?

I've seen this before on a few of mine, but it's usually caused by encrusting war with another acro. Sometimes they play nice, sometimes one loses. In extreme cases it will keep STN'ing from the base until the whole coral is gone. What sort of lighting do you use. If LED only, it could be caused by shadowing.

In this particular case it looks that way. Happens frequently on larger colonies, particularly with LED only setups as mentioned above. What kind of lights are you running?
