Is this normal? Clown fish cross breeding?

Hello,

I have two pairs of clowns in my tank. Recently they have switched partners. One pair are black ocellaris and the other are ora perc's picasso's.

They switched partners.. So I have two pairs of black ocellaris/picassos perc's. One is a breeding pair. They have recently started laying eggs about one or twice every few months. I am wondering if this is normal.. Would their off spring be viable? The eggs look great but they were eaten very quickly by other things in my tank.

They should be viable....Kinda funny how they switched partners though....One way to tell would be count the days till they hatch and if you see babies coming out then you know for sure.....I do not think that the parent or the offspring would be sterile either.

if they do hatch, i wouldnt mess with breeding them. shouldnt raise offspring of 2 diff species IMO

I saw another thread on this same topic. not sure if it was on here or RC but the guy that was doing it was doing it on purpose and the offspring was all in good health and extremely cool looking between the black and the picasso.

Where do you think some of the variations have come from, and anyways they are not 2 different species for crying out loud,
they are both Clowns! Just different type of the same species thats all. I would go for it, see if you can get any of them to live
and grow you might have the net ORA classic!

They are two different species - Amphiprion percula and Amphiprion ocellaris. Same family yes - but 2 species, assuming the OP is correct in that the regular clown is a true perc.
