Do any of you notice that when plating montis encrust over rock, there is this growth behind them?

Just to confirm, is this definatley a plating monti, as in montipora capricornis?

Yes, needs to support itself as plating,some shaded structure will die off when overgrown ,but still works to support large colony... :)
