I bought several zoa frags during the past year, and most of them grow in a mound shape instead of spreading out. Is this normal? Or does it mean I am doing something wrong? They started out as your typical 3 or 4 head frag on a disc-shaped plug, and they have grown more upward than outward. They seem to be reluctant the move out over the rocks.

Thanks. These two seem to be doing good. I have another that is doing great and is spreading outward instead of upward. And I have a few more that can’t decide if they want to survive or not. Here is my other good one. I have no idea what any of them are

My first batch of zoas did that. Grew up and on top of each other. My others grew sideways.

Those look great. I wouldn't worry about it.

Came here to say what everyone else said, mine do the same thing - bubble up on the frag to max capacity before spreading out to regular rock. The rock is lava.
