Hi all

I bought this guy unexpectedly on Boxing Day.
Been 2-3 days now and I’m pretty sure I see a few whites spots

Is this the start of ich and if so do tangs like this ever just get over it on its own

Or should it be going to the bare bottom tank on its own with copper ich medication?

Don’t really have the other tank setup.

He is currently eating find

Pictures might not show it well but it’s about the size of a silver dollar coin

He looks pretty tiny. I got mine at about the same size. Unfortunately they are super prone to ich. With ich they tend to eat well for the most part but they will continue to get worse and worse. I would highly encourage treatment. Not sure if this is ich or something else but I wouldn’t chance it. Good luck and hopefully he gets better soon!

I got my hippo in November 2019. Last November, when it was 4 years it suddenly got a very bad case of ich for absolutely no apparent reason as I had not added anything to the tank. It was a very bad case, as my hippo was almost completely white. But he continued to eat, so I did nothing and he recovered. I had seen some small spots on and off over the years, but never more than a few so I never worried about it.

Most people will recommend that you treat it with copper and treat all the fish it has been in contact with in a small quarantine tank, and keep the DT fish free for 2 month. Obviously I am not in agreement with most people. However, my fish was not new, it was very well adjusted to the tank and his tank mates, and therefore it was not in a stressful situation.
Your hippo being brand new may creates a different situation than mine.
