Just getting starting, Hello

I would like to to say hi, I am Nathan. I have been into freshwater for a long time, just getting into Saltwater. Still learning, been reading for a while to to learn. Currently my tank is a 55 gallon, with live sand and dry rock also put two small live rocks in thinking it would speed up the process of cycling. I received from a friend, it is old but works for me. I am currently into my second week of cycling the tank, keep making mistakes but just trying to learn. The window behind the tank goes another room in the house. Still in process of setting up, can not do a sump, but still looking for filter options.

If I could get some filtration suggestions, I am planning on running some soft corals as well? I want to put a Aquamaxx HOB 1.5 skimmeron , but still trying to look for a main filter for this tank. Also if I do a hob filter what is the best media to run with it? I have been looking at a Aquaclear 110. What do you think?
