I've set up so much redundancy in the system for equipment failure, that I missed the more obvious human failure.

Yesterday I must have accidently knocked my ATO fill line from the sump...and when I came home this morning (moving house right now so was at the other place) I found water everywhere.

Starting to freak out, I turned off everything and realized my 5g ATO was emptied over the floor and the tubing had gotten pulled out.

I have 3 float switches on my ATO for failure, stuck on and normal level. I failed to failure-proof human mistakes.
I also have a water alarm (which was going off!) but obviously the ONE night I wasn't home to hear it...something happens.

Time to get the Apex flood monitor so that it will turn off the ATO if water is detected.
I've always read people say don't use too big of an ATO reservoir. Thank god I didn't have 20g or something!!

Also -- One more item that would have probably saved me...I don't have a max runtime for the ATO on my Apex. Had I set that, I wouldn't have lost 5g overnight. I use about 1/2 gal a day during the winter, and 1g during the summer....so basically I could have drastically lowered the potential damage. I hope the fans get the water up and it doesn't damage the laminate floor too bad :(

I know...I already wasn't looking forward to moving everything, and I now don't have any more RODI water made because I had to refill the ATO with 5g, and top off lost water with the other 5g, which was the water I saved before disconnecting my RODI unit.

Guess I'll have to go to the store and fill the RODI jugs with water from the store to hold me over til I can hook up the RODI at the new house.

Old Murphy was just waiting for you to be away overnight. He catches a lot of reefers. I know he has surprised me a few times.

I had exactly the same thing happen. The ATO return fill tube fell out/got pulled out. I had about 10 gallons of water with kalkwasser on my floor.
I've been meaning to make and install a bracket to hold it in for years, but just never got around to it.

I left my rodi hooked up to my water change bucket when I went to bed, I thought I was safe because I turned it off... Apparently my cat thought I needed to make more water and turned in on in the middle of the night! Long story short, I woke up to a pond in my living room of a third story apartment! Lesson learned for me.
