Dinos…I hate dinos. After doing a bunch of research on the forum and getting feedback, I took a trip to @WWC to get their take on the situation. They recommended the Dr. Tims route so I’m gonna give that a shot.

I siphoned what I could and filtered the gunk with a filter sock, then put the same water back in.

Nutrients are NO3: 5ppm Phos: .05ppm.

Operation Dino Bomb is a go and blackout protocol has been initiated.

Well I am getting myself ready for a looong night. I am going to be doing a rip clean and replacement of my sand bed as well as a new aquascape. These amphidinium dinos hit hard and I have tried just about everything short of dino x, which I do have on standby if the dinos come back after this process.

- Blackouts with Dr. Tims refresh and waste away- No effect
- Blackouts with H2O2 dosing- No effect
- Si dosing to grow diatoms- heavy cyano
- chemiclean for cyano- made dinos worse

I'll be following this methodology: https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/official-sand-rinse-and-tank-transfer-thread.230281/

Step 1: Rinsing new sand in tap over and over and over until no silt is present. Using Carib Sea live sand.
Step 2: Fish and inverts into one bucket, corals in a seperate bucket (bucket = 27 gallon storage tub)
Step 3: Scrape the glass clean and remove the infected sand.
Step 4: H2O2 soak my power head
Step 5: New rockscape
Step 6: New Sand
Step 7: Reintroduce corals with same water
Step 8: Reintroduce fish with same water - All said and done should be about a 50% water change overall.
Step 9: Clean Sump
Step 10: Hit the tank with some MB7
Step 11: Ramp up lights at 20% blue in the morning and small increases back to normal.

If steps 1-11 fail and dinos show up again....

Following. I just started a red sea reefer 350 g2 in dec 2022 so in the early stages myself. This is my 4th tank but my first dive into full corals. All my previous were fish tanks with easy to keep softies like gsp mushrooms and leathers.

But one suggestion ill make for you is get an algae scrubber. Nothing makes people quit the hobbly like nuisance algae stuff in you display tank. It can be a complete nightmare. I started a clearwater algae scrubber from day 1 on this tank and have had no algae issues in my main tank other than a little on the sand that a sift thru on water change fixes. I have already cleaned it twice in about 7 weeks. Here is a pic of my set up from a few weeks back.

algae scrubber cleaning 2 february 2023.jpg

Look at that sickness but all in the scrubber and none in display. Remove it every 2 weeks and take out all that fish poo and rotting food for a spotless tank.

If you strip all the nutrients out of your tank big problems will come your way.

Yea that lid is kind of a point of sale… It is a pain to do. They give you like a plastic pizza cutter to push the rubber in that holds the net in place; you obviously want it taught, but if you use the pizza cutter to hard it actually snaps the netting, so now you have a hole on the edge; it’s flimsy; you have to cut the metal pieces yourself. Yeah I cant wait to get a new lid haha!

It is a pain in the butt, but it does work and is less than half the price…

Clear view is nice also you can check out:
