I didn't think micro brittle stars reproduced by splitting but they do regenerate limbs if they get chopped off.
Mine spawn by releasing stuff into the water.

All I can say is I know I only put one in and now there is two lol. Also looking at the legs both have some short ones which makes me think it was a split as the one I put in had equal length arms. That said it's certainly possible another hitchhiked in.

Uuuggh got water in my CO2 reactor and my pH took a dive from 8.09 to 7.65. Corals are less than pleased. Dried it out replaced the soda lime and adjusted a return nozzle for some extra surface agitation. Hopefully a bounce back by morning.
