Hello, I bought this controller knowing it was “backwards compatible” with a-series kessil lights. I have the a160 and I cannot figure out how to get this to work!

I assume you have the 3.5mm plug connected to the light and controller? I was running my 360x's and a 160 in the sump with my controller, running two different programs. Just use the Runs Blue program and modify to your liking, then you'll have to assign the program to the 0-10v port.

Do I need to purchase this cord? The box did come with one that fits the 0-10v slot on the controller and I hooked that to the light and the other cord goes to the firmware slot and I connnected it to a usb 5v/1a to power the controller but the controller doesn’t turn on or anything even though plugged in.

Actually, any 3.5mm audio cable (stereo) will work. It needs to be TRS ( tip, ring, sleeve). This will work or one with a right angle too. The power supply needs to be 5.35v / 2A. 1A isn't enough to power the controller.

This is the power supply for the 1st gen controller, but I would check Kessil's website to be sure. Usually, the "x" version is powered by a 360x thru the k-link cable.

As noted, X controller gets its power from the X light. If you are only running a legacy light like the 360W, 160 or 80, you have to run a USB wall wart power supply. X controller comes with the cable you need, you just need to get a USB power supply.
