The story is completely true and happened today.
It is entitled "Oops"
It was a morning just like today, since it happened today, and I was awakened by the sound of my cellular device vibrating on my headboard.
At 11:30am
"Hey, I had to rush to work and think the pond is frozen. Will you check and unplug the pump if it is?"
I reply, "yes i will," expecting it to be just that. A simple unplugging and I'm good to go. Then I can drive back home and finish the coffee i started before I left. Nope.
As I walk up to the once filled pond I see this:

My jaw dropped, and so did the water! I stood there for quite a while before the dry whirling of the pump reminded me what I was doing in the first place. I unplugged it than in disbelief looked again. The wind chill is -7 degrees Frankenstein and my hands were numb from the get go. I walked around to the external filter and realized it had froze on the waterfall and in the filter itself and the pump, being at the bottom of the pond, kept pumping up water until it was completely dry. And then I saw this!
The water had been pumped so rapidly it flooded the area behind it , and then froze solid. The pond was 7 ft deep by 20 across. Now that's a solid block of ice! That tree is going to love it when it melts.
The ponds bottom was impossible to photograph. I did get down and listen for any flapping but quickly realized the entire bottom was rock hard and the fish were just as solid. The ice had collapsed in on itself and crushed most of the large ones anyway.
If there ever was ice in hell this would be the situation. I'm terribly sad for the owner of this pond, however I told them this would happen.
Just because something can live in harsh climates does not mean they should have to. There were over 40 fish, mostly koi.
What a day what a day. Use a heater if you have a pond and you live in places birds migrate from. They leave for a reason people.
