Apologies, I haven’t seen any posts on here about temperate tanks but a friend of mine is struggling with algae in his pond but my knowledge of temperate algae eating fish is very limited.

As far as I’m aware he’s having to regularly scrape the algae off and water change the pond and has now cleaned out the filter but he’s looking to move towards trying to create more of a balanced, lower maintenance system.

Any suggestions would be massively appreciated.

Google barley straw for algae control in ponds. It has been used for years as a algae inhibitor.

Interesting . My pond is 12 feet by 12 feet 6 feet deep one end 4 in other have potato rocks making a wall. I harvest pounds of algae every three months depending on weather conditions and throw it behind the pond . The plants love it . So how do you use barley Straw ?

Not sure it will work in a cold climate. I use it in outdoor Rubbermaid tubs here in Texas. Submerge it in a mesh container and it starts deteriorating into the water. It helped but was not complete eradication. I use koi and in my deeper pond I used Israeli Blue Talipia.

Koi are filthy . too big . I just throw in feeder Goldfish . i have some that are 8 inches now. I have to fight off migrating Herons here > I live on the North Shore of Lake Erie. I will have to look up Talipia . . Its hits in the 90s here in the Summer July till August . Which is why the Algae blooms even with me circulating it
