Leather coral growing new foot?

I got this toadstool a little over a month ago, and it has this crazy long, spindly foot but a really solid body. The foot wasn’t enough to support the coral on its own, so I put it on a lower shelf or rock, and used a higher shelf to support the main coral. The origional foot (circled in black) has gradually receded off of the tiny piece of rubble it was attached to when I got it (circled in red). Where the coral is resting on the higher shelf, there is a white protrusion on the coral, I’m curious as to what it is. Is the coral anchoring to the higher shelf? Or is it something else entirely?

Thank you!! I’ve noticed that the polyp’d part of the coral sometimes looks like it has three little sections. It all makes sense now!

once they start splitting when do they stop :) i got about 12 of them now and one huge one about 12 inch dia
