OK- i've found nothing but mixed reviews on this subject. i ordered a green sinularia colony (its supposed to be pretty big) from SaltCritters (i order a lot of corals from salty and have had nothing but good experiences) the other day and it will be coming in tomorrow morning. Dont laugh- but i have a Beamswork reef led 48" over my 55 gal tank (a knock off of Marineland's reef capable fixture). I have LPS (hammers, duncans, bubble coral) and a green monti cap all growing fine at about mid level, as well as kenyas, chili coral, mushrooms, palys, zoanthids, mushroom, ricordia, GSP (all basic stuff) in there as well. I do not have a protein skimmer. I have heard mixed things about the toxins that leathers produce- i have friends in the hobby that tell me that leathers only do that in the presence of other leathers (which i do not have), but from what i've read online sometimes leathers can wipe out LPS. Could this maybe be just some people blaming coral deaths on leathers? is it maybe a response to leathers being stung? i plan on placing my leather NOWHERE near my LPS just as a precaution- which leads me to another question- how much light/flow do sinularias need? i've heard high from some places, and low/moderate from others? I consider my lighting "moderate" based on how my corals have been doing.
also- ordered a purple stereonepthya from CultivatedReef.com, this will be my first order from there and Greg there was very helpful. that will also be coming in tomorrow. does anyone have any advice on placing these guys- info on them is limited. from what i understand they are basically photosynthetic carnation corals- Greg says they have been growing in his system a while and he never feeds them. how much flow/light should i give them (just as a reference my bubble coral is on the sand bed in my tank and is happiest there). i have kept carnation corals in the past as well with no problems- actually got a tiny frag to grow (i fed it phyto every other day) until it got swept away in the current and i never saw it again.
