Let Me ID Your Wrasse!

That Doliatus is listed as Hologymnosus rhodonotus in the latest Kuiter book.

Yeah, don't have that book but I just googled Doliatus rhodonotus and all that comes up is Hologymnosus species. The picture of a juvenile H. doliatus on Reefkeeping.com looks different though. Ssme shape and longitudinal stripes but a silvery body and stripes are red, vs. white with orange -to-yellow stripes.

Yeah,I wasn't paying attention to what I was typing, Hologymnosus rhodonotus, was what I meant.

The behavior is a bit different than pencil wrasses. They get larger, are hardier, but will definitely pick at cuc. Some can be aggressive, others can be quite tolerant of other fish.

Male or female?

H. ornatissimus, female. They can be a little on the aggressive side for a Halichoeres wrasse.

Is that a malanurus wrasse ? How can you tell it's a female?

Ok, a bit of poking around and it seems these are quite bit different than pencil wrasses. Those stay small, this baby will apparently grow to 18" and is a fish eater. Whoops. Fortunately it is in a large FOWLR with mostly larger fish, but a few smaller ones such as a mystery wrasse. He's less than 3" now though, so hopefully I've got a few years before he is big enough to do any damage and by then, if necessary, I can catch him.

Good news is that early indications are it will be much easier to keep than a pencil wrasse. Those have always been shy and tough to get eating. This guy - not so much. I fed for the first time this evening since adding him and he stole a piece of krill from my harlequin tusk at lighting speed. Little fella is not afraid to mix it up with the big boys.

No, not a melanurus, though closely related. It is called a christmas wrasse, but there are a number of species by that common name.

You can tell it's female because there is no color on the caudal.

Please help identity the 2 wrasse's . I was told the 1st one is a Naoko fairy wrasse but it is certainly not one. What one is it?
2nd one is supposed to be a blue sided wrasse - (Cirrhilabrus cyanopleura) - but it does not seem so? Which one is it?

Those are some good ones.
Unfortunately, the first one isn't totally definitive right now. It's a female of the rubriventralis complex for sure, and I feel may well be rubriventralis, but there is a possibility it's naokoae.

The second one is cyanopleura, but female as well.

Thanks guy's, , i ordered a male female pair of african exquisites but i thought i got two males as well. Part of the reson for the post, at least i got the male solar iordered late on.

All three seem to be pretty buddy for now, exquisite have been in the d.t about 2 months the solar about two. Weeks

Yes, the first one is cf pylei.
The second is a female of the lunatus complex; either cf. lunatus or cf. lanceolatus, but there's no way to tell until it matures more.
