It is a C. cf. Cyanopleura male. They are frequently sold as females C. solorensis.

This wrasse was sold to me as a Christmas Wrasse. He is currently 3 inches long. I'm guessing he is really a male Melanurus?

Mira I would agree with that. I have both a melanarus and a Christmas and that pic is a melanarus. Pretty fish!

^Definitely a melanurus and not a christmas wrasse.

Christmas wrasse means a lot of different things to different people. I had an H. claudia that was sold as a Christmas wrasse, other places refer to H. cosmetus as Christmas wrasse. Heck one of my LFS's had a beautiful Greyhead wrasse they were calling a Christmas wrasse. Still kick myself for not buying him on the spot but my QT was full at the moment.

Thanks for confirming my suspicions. I knew "Christmas Wrasse" was a catchall for a variety of wrasses, which is why I wanted to identify the actual species. He is a great fish! And even though he isn't a "Christmas Wrasse" I did buy him a Christmas gift. I got him a Wrasse Den from Gooch. It arrived yesterday. I think he enjoys his new bed.

Any recommendations on a wrasse addition with a cebu pylei male? Seems like if i redo the rock work he doesn't care to much on new additions. Had him now 4 months and very little aggression from him towards other fish in the 4' 120. In the tank now 2 clowns, 2 chromis, chalk bass, 1 pajama cardinal, and a starry blenny. Wouldn't be against adding a female addition for it possibly to pair up with if think possible. Or would I risk the pair becoming aggressive over territory.

Cebu Pylie's aren't overly aggressive, according to those who have kept both them and Pylie's from other areas. You would definitely want to use an acclimation box as already mentioned. I would not suggest getting a female. Fairy Wrasses really don't pair up as you would think. In the home aquarium, usually the male is not able to "keep" the female a female, and so you end up with two males. This sometimes works out, sometimes doesn't. Instead, get one from a different species altogether.

Ok thanks. We are talking of going up to an 8' 200+gal tank at some point to so maybe just add a few more wrasses if and when we decide to do that ;) thanks for quick reply.

If it stays female, it will lose the spot on its caudal fin, but retain the two on its dorsal fin. If it transitions to a terminal male, it will lose all three.
